Cllr Ian George
Biography

Ian has lived in Surbiton for over ten years. He became a Councillor for Alexandra ward in May 2006. Along with Cllr Hudson, he carries out regular ward surgeries throughout the ward. Ian was born in nearby Hounslow, and is a life-long supporter (for his sins!) of Brentford Football Club. He works for a large charity that helps those with learning disabilities, based in Surrey.

Achievements as a Councillor

Over the past couple of years, Ian has been instrumental in several high profile local campaigns. He campaigned:

 • To keep open Hobkirk House, a day centre for the elderly and disabled.
 • Against the recent planning proposal by Tesco, due to the increase in traffic and pollution.
 • To keep open Surbiton Hopsital.
 • Against a massive increase in charges for the elderly and disabled who need home help.
 • To keep open the threatened wards in Tolworth Hospital.
 • To keep open Tudor Library.

Goals as a Councillor

Ian wants to see Council Tax lowered. “I have seen how our Council tax is continuously wasted on unnecessary items such as water jets in the centre of Kingston and glossy magazines that few people read. Yet the Council can’t find the money for services that help those who really are in need.”

Ian has recently been involved in the review of the Council’s Library service. “There were some good ideas put forward to improve the service. However, I am worried that there will be further cuts to the Library service over the coming years. Local Conservatives won their campaign to save Tudor Library in 2007. This area needs a Library in both Surbiton and Tolworth. I promise to fight any proposal to close either of these Libraries.

Ian wants more investment in Tolworth. “For too long Tolworth has been the forgotten part of the borough. The area doesn’t just need a one off injection of cash. The area needs a long term commitment from the Council, which needs to actively seek investment from all sources. I am worried about overdevelopment and will continue to campaign for less financial waste and more police. I fully support our local Safer Neighbourhood team.”

Ian is looking at further improving the ways that he stays in touch with local people. “We deliver regular leaflets and letters, we carry out regular Advices Surgeries and street stalls, but we can always do more. I will continue to call at local houses to meet local people and find out what they want and help when possible. I would like all local residents to feel that I and Cllr Hudson are working on their behalf and taking their views into account.”
