Climate change demands urgent action and yet, under Labour, carbon emissions have actually risen. We need to makeBritain safer and greener and one way we can achieve this is by switching to more renewable energy and making our energy supply more secure.
Britain is currently far too reliant on fossil fuels and our centralised energy system means energy is wasted through heat loss and distribution. In other countries, such as the Netherlands, small, low carbon, energy sources have led a process of decentralisation.
We believe in making it easier for people to generate their own electricity - so we will change the architecture of Britain’s electricity supply to allow decentralised energy to play a major role. Our system of feed-in tariffs, set out in a Green Paper published in December 2007, will mean that a fixed price is paid for all electricity produced from decentralised, low carbon sources - such as wind power, photovoltaic, combined heat and power, biomass, waste and micro-hydro.
We will give every small business, local school, hospital and household in the country the chance to generate electricity through micro-generation. And we will make the installation of micro-generators simpler and quicker. |

Peter Ainsworth, Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs:
"Making it easier and more rewarding for households to generate their own energy from renewable sources will not only be good for the environment, but will strengthen our energy security in an uncertain world. We want to make Britain a leader in the development of efficient, affordable, low carbon technologies. You can help by joining us today." |
