Conservatives save money whilst securing long term future of leisure facilities
Conservative-controlled Kingston has secured the long-term future management of the borough’s leisure facilities and in the process of doing so, saved a massive £2.2million.
The Council had previously been in extensive negotiations with the existing leisure management contract holder, Places for People Leisure, who currently manages the council's leisure centres and have secured the future of these vital services. After many months of hard work, a new contract has been announced saving the council money.
The new extended contract negotiated by Conservative councillors will run until 2026 and will focus on creating active places and healthy people. These two approaches centre around getting more people in our communities active and living healthy lifestyles. The four council-run leisure centres in the borough are Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Kingsmeadow Fitness and Athletics Centre, Malden Centre and Tolworth Recreation Centre.
Cllr Andrea Craig, Sports Champion at Kingston Council, said:
With over 700,000 visitors to our leisure centres in the last year alone, we are lucky enough to have a fantastic base on which to create a new, innovative vision for Kingston’s leisure and health services.
In the future, we see leisure services being integrated with health, creating community hubs which would be an easier, one stop shop for our residents. In fact, we’re already working with our Public Health team to see how we could help deliver clinical health functions, including hosting GP exercise by referral sessions and NHS health checks across our four leisure centres.
The council is in the middle of creating a masterplan for Kingston’s leisure facilities, with community hubs at the heart of the proposals. There will be opportunities for local people to get involved throughout the process as we shape the future of Kingston’s health and leisure services together.
John Bates, Business Development Director at Places for People Leisure, said:
We are delighted that the our existing leisure management contract with Kingston Council has been extended. At Places for People Leisure we’re extremely passionate about helping local communities stay physically active and emotionally engaged in fitness, sport and wellbeing. Our mission is to put our heart and soul into ‘Creating active places and healthy people’.
We are looking forward to continuing our excellent partnership with Kingston Council, to provide its local residents with an integrated health and leisure service in the coming years.
There are a number of leisure facilities that residents can access across the borough. For more information on these and staying healthy and active in Kingston, visit www.kingston.gov.uk/sports.
